New Year “Resolutions,” Part 1
Gender on the Ballot has a special feature this month: New Year “resolutions” from our expert bloggers for closing the gender gap in politics. We’ll publish a few each week during the month of January, and we welcome your thoughts for 2026 at ongender@gmail.com.
Betsy Fischer Martin, Executive Director, Women & Politics Institute:
“In 2026, I resolve to keep pushing for a political culture where women’s voices are heard, trusted, and taken seriously: on the ballot, in the media, and in the rooms where decisions are made. This means continuing to build a deeper bench of women leaders by treating political leadership as a skill we can teach and learn, not a rare calling. When women are visible as experts and candidates, and equipped with the confidence, tools, and real-world experience to lead, it changes who believes leadership is possible and strengthens our democracy for everyone.”
Lily Carver, American University student, working towards her BA and MA in political science:
“I hope to see international progress toward equitable access to health care, education, and full autonomy that knows no borders. With this I hope the voices of women everywhere are amplified. And personally I hope to celebrate and find joy in all progress no matter how big or how small.” Read her blog here.
Emily Krichbaum, PhD, Director of Strategic Programs and Education at the National Women’s History Museum:
“In 2026, I resolve to summon the courage of Jane Goodall, who knew exactly what she wanted and stated it so boldly for everyone to hear, without waiting for permission or the perfect credentials. And, I hope those reading this will do the same. This world needs more individuals who believe in their unique capacity and potential.” Read her two-part blog here & here.
